“30%
of companies don’t appreciate the value of the data
stored on their networks” (DTI Report 2001)
A recent DTI report has once again highlighted
the increasing importance of information security in everyday
business, and has uncovered some surprising facts:
-
60% of organisations have suffered
a security breach in the last 2 years.
-
Over 30% of organisations do not
recognise that any of their business information is
either sensitive or critical and therefore a business
asset.
-
Only 1 in 7 organisations have a
formal information management security policy in place.
-
Few organisations were able or prepared
to report the business implications of the security
breaches they had suffered - but those that were, indicated
the cost of a single breach could be in excess of £100,000.
In
today’s digital world, a company’s electronic
assets may hold more value than its physical “bricks
and mortar”. Intellectual property and proprietary
information stored on a company’s computer system
may hold the keys to the business’s success.
When that company connects its employees
to the outside world via the Internet, enabling them to
communicate with customers, partners and other organisations,
it may also be opening its doors to unwanted intruders.
Thanks to the Internet, an interloper need
not physically break into a company’s premises in
order to obtain valuable information and/or inflict damage.
