SPAM is the common term for Unsolicited Commercial Email
(UCE). It has two distinct characteristics:
- Spam promotes products or services for sale, AND
- Spam is un-requested by the recipient.
Spam is flooding the Internet with many
copies of the same message, in an attempt to force the message
on people who would not otherwise choose to receive it.
Most spam is commercial advertising, often for dubious products,
get-rich-quick schemes, or quasi-legal services. Spam costs
the sender very little to send -- most of the costs are
paid for by the recipient or the carriers rather than by
the sender.
In everyday use, Spam is typically used
to mean any unwanted email.
Spam costs Spammers very little to send,
as ISPs and recipients incur the bulk of the costs of transmitting
it. Spam can be expensive for your company, in both the
consumption of network resources and lost employee productivity…
